San Ramon 's topography is diverse and features a combination of the Diablo Range rolling hills and the San Ramon Valley flatter basin. The city is predominantly urban and residential with many new developments in housing, although much of the land around the perimeter regions of the city remains undeveloped and is covered by grasslands and orchards of oak trees. The grasses become golden during the drier months but with winter and spring rains, the grasses turn green.
The weather in San Ramon typifies a Mediterranean, seasonal, and moderate climate. Summers are warm to hot and dry whilst winters are mild or cool, wet, and short. Its weather is close to Danville, Dublin and Pleasanton neighborhoods. Fog may be rare but usually occurs in the city's western corners, at Crow Canyon 's eastern mouth, from which marine weather patterns funnel into Castro Valley from San Francisco Bay. It normally burns off until mid to late in the morning.
The lands now occupied by the City of San Ramon were once populated by the people of Seunen, an Ohlone / Costanoan tribe who built their homes along the streams. They were taken by Mission San José sometime around 1797 for use as grazing land. Both were members of José María Amador's land grant to Rancho San Ramon in 1834.
Amador named San Ramón (Spanish for "Saint Ramon"') not after a real saint but after a Native American vaquero who tended sheep on the land for missions. In Spanish practice, Amador added the "San."
Pacific Air Lines Flight 773 crashed close to San Ramon in 1964 after a passenger fired at both pilots.
