This multi-use, full-access trail between the towns of Concord and Pleasanton follows the right-of - way of the Southern Pacific Railroad established in 1891 and abandoned in 1978. As of 2014, the completed Iron Horse Regional Trail spans 32 miles in length. The latest Trail segment, which closed a 1.8-mile gap from the Pleasanton / Dublin BART station to Santa Rita Road in Pleasanton, opened to the public on 19 August 2014, after nearly 30 years of planning and financing efforts. This trail, which represents interagency cooperation and a community-wide effort by individuals and groups, creates a significant recreational and commute component for the communities it serves. The path links industrial and commercial neighborhoods, business parks, colleges, public transit (BART, County Connection), parks and open fields, national roads, and civic services.

The Iron Horse Trail that was developed begins at Concord near Highway 4. It passes south across Walnut Creek and crosses east at Rudgear Road near a Park & Ride, under I-680. From there the trail goes through a rural / residential area to connect with Alamo town center and shopping center Alamo Square. Continuing south, the trail runs through residential areas through a greenbelt and into downtown Danville. It takes a jog across Danville Boulevard, passes under I-680, and continues south past Pine Valley Road to the San Ramon County Line extending to the Dublin / Pleasanton BART and then to the Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area. The Iron Horse Regional Trail will eventually continue to extend to cover a distance of about 55 miles, connecting 12 towns from Livermore in Alameda County to Suisun Bay in Contra Costa County.
