University of California is a public academic institution based in Berkeley , California. Founded in 1868, it is the University of California 's oldest and flagship campus, and has been ranked among the top 10 universities in the world by numerous major educational publications.

Berkeley is among the 14 pioneering members of the Association of American Universities and in the fiscal year ending June 30th 2018 had $797 million in R&D spending. Today, Berkeley keeps close ties with three U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories — Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory — and is home to many institutes, including the Mathematical Science Research Institute and the Space Sciences Laboratory. Berkeley also provides a collaborative research program at the UCSF Medical Centre, through its affiliate institution University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

Berkeley is a huge, mainly residential Tier One research university with a large percentage of its enrollment in undergraduate programmes, but also offers a comprehensive PhD program. Since 1949 the university has been certified by the Western Association of Senior College and University Commission Schools and Colleges. The university is one of only two UC campuses that operate on a calendar semester (the other is UC Merced). Berkeley offers 106 Bachelor's degrees, 88 Master's degrees, 97 research-focused PhD programs and 31 professional graduate degrees. In 2013–2014, the university earned 7,565 bachelor's, 2,610 master's or technical degrees, and 930 doctoral degrees.

The Berkeley campus covers about 1,232 acres (499 ha), while the "core campus" comprises only this area's low-lying western 178 acres (72 ha). The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory covers about 200 acres (81 ha); other buildings outside the main campus include the Lawrence Hall for Science and many academic departments, including the Space Sciences Laboratory, the Mathematical Science Research Institute, an undeveloped 800-acre (320 ha) ecological preserve, the University of California Botanical Gar. Parts of the campus' mostly underdeveloped, eastern area are actually within the City of Oakland; these areas extend north from the Claremont Resort to Tilden Park through the Panoramic Hill neighborhood.

UC Berkeley has expanded to over 1,600 faculty members, 35,000 students and over 350 degree programs in 130 academic divisions and 80 interdisciplinary research units, from 10 faculty members, 40 students and three fields of study at the time of its creation.
