San Rafael High School is part of the San Rafael City Schools school district. Its official nickname is the Bulldogs, however its athletic teams have been known casually as the Dawgs since the mid-1980s.

San Rafael High School served as the setting for the video of the 1984 power ballad "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger.

The school scored 680 in 2006 on the Academic Performance Index (API), the school performance assessment system of the California Department of Education. It also passed all the criteria required by the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 for Adequate Yearly Performance (AYP).

The school served as a primary venue for the independent feature film The Prankster in September 2008. While filming was taking place, school was in session and some students and teachers had background roles in the film. With Kurt Fuller, who played Dean Pecarino in the film, former principal Judy Colton had a small speaking part.

Recently, San Rafael High is ranked #3,949 in the National Rankings. Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation and how well they prepare students for college.

At San Rafael High, the average ACT composite score was 24, compared to the nationwide average of 20. Each year, roughly 42 out of 1100 total students take the ACT.

This is very good performance, putting San Rafael High in the top 25% of high schools in California by ACT score. Nationwide, a 24 on the ACT is 74th percentile, so most ACT test takers at San Rafael High are well above average.

Since the ACT is designed to measure what you are learning in school, high ACT scores are a good indication that you will receive a great education and be surrounded by other students who appreciate academic achievements.

San Rafael High School is a long standing (founded since 1888) high school with tons of history. All students that graduated from here end up loving this school and leaving them with nice memories. This school offers a variety of honor and AP classes. We believe that SRHS offers not only knowledge but also a great experience for parents and students alike.
