Mills was founded in Benicia, California in 1852 as the Young Ladies' Seminary—two years after California became a state. In 1865 the seminary was acquired by missionaries Susan and Cyrus Mills (champions for better education for women) and called it Mills Institution.

 

Mills is an independent liberal arts college with graduate programs for all genders for women and gender nonbinary students. The College educates students to think critically and communicate responsibly and effectively, to take on the challenges of their creative visions, and to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to effect thoughtful changes in a global, multicultural society.
