Las Positas College is located 40 miles southeast of San Francisco, amid one of the fastest growing business, science , and technology regions in California. Gently rolling hills and picturesque vineyards form the scenic background for the 147-acre campus of the college.
The Las Positas College opened as a Chabot College Extension Center in 1963, providing 24 courses and enrolling 810 students at Livermore High School and two other sites. By 1965 the curriculum had been growing and relocated to Livermore Granada High School. This eventually expanded to include both high schools in Amador and Dublin. That same year the District purchased the Livermore site with the intention of developing a comprehensive community college. On 31 March 1975, "Valley Campus" began as Chabot College's Livermore Education Center.
The College was designated as an independent college by the Board of Governors in 1988 and on January 7, 1991 LPC received full accreditation from the Community and Junior Colleges Accrediting Commission.
Currently, Las Positas College enrolls nearly 8,500 students during the day and at night. For students pursuing job readiness, moving to a four-year college or university, or personal enrichment, the College provides a resume. The College provides university transfer classes, retraining classes for those in need of employment or career advancement, a first time educational opportunity for many adults, enrichment classes for those seeking a broader perspective, and career and technical training for those entering the technical and paraprofessional workforce.
